The ICT&S Center is located on the premises of a former printing business. After this business moved out the building housed the faculty of communication studies before it finally became the home of the ICT&S Center. This transformation of the inhabitants goes somehow hand in hand with the development of communication: What started with Gutenberg's printing press has now become a modern research center.
It was the idea to create something new in a historic place and therefore the building was converted into a modern and transparent science loft in the heart of the city of Salzburg. Heinrich Schmidinger, president of the Salzburg University, pointed out the center is situated in a "unique international setting" opposite the Salzburg Festival Hall and beside Salzburg's Museum of Modern Art, the Rupertinum. Consequently, the ICT&S Center feels obliged to do justice to its high visibility location by providing research and study opportunities at the highest international standards.
Open-space architecture engaged in a respectful dialogue with the more than 500-year-old building provides an inspiring surrounding for transdisciplinary and international research in the field of Information and Communication Technologies and Society.
